Fourth Airbnb in three months. Sitting there at like 3 AM, power’s out again happened all the time in that building, I swear the electrical was held together with duct tape and I’m just completely over it.
Visa runs. God, the visa runs.
Every 60 days I had to leave Thailand and it was destroying me mentally. You ever done one? They’re the worst. Wake up at some insane hour like 4 AM, book the cheapest flight to Singapore or KL because this happens every two months and costs pile up fast. Land somewhere. Walk around an airport mall for hours feeling like a complete idiot because you’re not there to actually do anything, you’re literally just there to not be in Thailand so you can immediately go back to Thailand.
Why? Because “tourist visa” except everyone knows I’m not a tourist.
Fly back same day usually because hotels cost money and what’s the point. Stand in immigration line at Bangkok with this feeling in your stomach like you might throw up. Hand passport to officer. Watch them flip through all those stamps. They always pause. Always look at you and say “you come Thailand many time”.
And you’re like “haha yeah love it here” while internally going oh god oh god is this the time they deny me.
Nobody posts about this part on Instagram with their laptop and beach photo. Being a digital nomad sounds cool until you’re technically a tourist everywhere but obviously not a tourist and everyone knows it immigration knows it, your landlord who makes you pay three months upfront knows it, the coffee shop lady where you work every day knows it.
We all just pretend it’s fine until someone stops pretending and you get denied entry with all your shit stuck in an apartment you can’t legally access anymore.
So I’m sitting there sweating, no AC, maybe 85 degrees inside, and Marcus sends me a screenshot. Dubai Marina sunset. Those crazy glass towers. Water. Looks fake it’s so perfect. Just says “Finally”.
He got the Dubai virtual work visa. The remote work one. Or virtual working programme? Same thing I think. One year UAE residence visa for digital nomads.
Almost threw my phone I was so jealous.
Not at Marcus good for him honestly. But jealous of the situation. I’m running a legitimate business, paying US taxes every year like a responsible adult, making decent money, doing everything “right” supposedly, and I’m still in this weird grey area where technically probably breaking some rule but everyone ignores it until they don’t.
Marcus has basically same setup as me. Same type of business I think, maybe slightly different but similar enough. And he just got a full year of legal residency somewhere.
That screenshot changed everything. Stopped casually reading about Dubai and actually started seriously thinking okay maybe I need to actually do this Dubai virtual work visa thing.
Six months later I’m in Dubai writing this. Still kind of can’t believe it worked honestly.
Getting here though nobody tells you the actual real stuff. Every guide is like “three requirements!” and that’s it like thanks that’s super helpful. Nobody tells you where you’ll mess up or spend weeks confused because government websites contradict each other constantly.
What Even Is This Visa Thing
The Dubai virtual work visa or Virtual Working Programme or Remote Work Visa depending which random website you’re on, the government sites don’t even agree which is super helpful it’s for remote workers and digital nomads working for companies outside UAE.
Simple right? Work for company not in UAE. Keep that job. Move to Dubai. Get legal residency for a year.
Should be easy.
Wasn’t.
July 2025 I’m researching and keep seeing “Dubai suspends digital nomad visa” and “UAE stops accepting applications” everywhere. I’m thinking perfect timing, finally decide to do this and they close it literally right now.
Almost quit completely. Started looking at Portugal. Spain maybe. Or was it Mexico? Don’t remember.
Then some random person in Facebook group no idea who posts “everyone calm down that’s the freelance visa, remote work visa is different, still open”.
Wait what.

Two different visas apparently. Similar names. Everyone confusing them including me apparently.
Freelance Visa got suspended July 5, 2025. That was for freelancers wanting to work with UAE clients and international clients both. Already have it? Can renew. New applications? Nope stopped.
Virtual Work Visa though? Still open. Still accepting people. Working same as always.
Wasted three weeks thinking it was closed. THREE WEEKS. Looking at other countries, researching alternatives, completely unnecessary.
The Dubai remote work visa thing is still available October 2025. UAE just became number two worldwide for digital nomads after Portugal actually. Even more people applying now because freelance option gone and this is only way to live Dubai long-term without local job.
You get one year legal residency, renewable if still qualify. Can sponsor spouse and kids, costs more but possible. UAE healthcare. Local bank accounts which is big because try opening bank account as “tourist” yeah right good luck with that.
Sign actual apartment leases without landlords laughing at your tourist visa. Phone plan. Gym. Actually live there instead of vacation lie.
But you can’t work for UAE clients on this Dubai virtual work visa.
Income has to come from outside UAE. All of it. Employed? Employer outside UAE. Business? Business outside UAE, clients international.
Not like other nomad visas where you can do local side work. Dubai’s strict. Different visa types exist for UAE work and if you’re on virtual work visa taking UAE clients you’re violating terms.
Someone I know got visa revoked doing consulting for Dubai company, got reported. UAE doesn’t mess around.
Keep work international basically.
Who Qualifies I Don’t Even Know
Looking at requirements first time thought okay seems straightforward. Make enough money, have business, have bank statements, good.
Then trying to figure out exact documents needed as business owner everything got messy.
Government websites contradict each other. Different things about income, paperwork needed. Three weeks cross-referencing sources, asking Facebook groups, texting Marcus constantly with questions.
Frustrating. Eventually figured it out mostly.

Employees Are Easy
W-2 employee or whatever equivalent, working remotely for company outside UAE easiest spot to be in. What Dubai virtual work visa was designed for. Pretty straightforward.
Valid employment contract minimum one year left. Want job stability. Don’t want people showing up losing job four months later becoming broke. Contract expires in six months? Get renewed first.
Proof make at least $3,500 USD monthly. Except annoying part—some applications late 2024 into 2025 asking for $5,000 instead.
Talked to bunch of people who went through this. Maybe fifteen? Could be twelve. Lot of people. Official requirement says $3,500. Actual practice? Recent applications getting requests for $5,000 proof. Hasn’t officially changed but like unofficial new threshold.
Making $5,000+ monthly? Fine zero issues. Around $3,500? Probably approved but might get extra scrutiny. Below $3,500? Don’t bother.
Letter from employer saying can work remotely job’s stable. Company letterhead signed by HR or manager specifically says allowed work from Dubai.
Freaked out about this letter. Company never wrote one. Emailed HR “need letter for visa saying can work remotely Dubai” they’re like “don’t have template for that never done this”.
Drafted it myself. Wrote what UAE wanted formatted it sent to HR “review this edit whatever sign it send back on letterhead”.
Back in two days. Just do work for people sometimes make it easy.
Business Owners Gets Messy
This is me. Business owner. More complicated than employees for sure.
Business outside UAE? Can qualify but paperwork annoying.
Proof business operating one year minimum. Business registration docs articles of incorporation whatever shows when established. One full year operations.
Brand new business? Forget it come back in year. Don’t want month-old LLCs zero track record.
Evidence own the business. Shareholding certificates if incorporated partnership agreements if partnership sole proprietorship registration whatever. Shows own or co-own not just employed.
Proof making $3,500 monthly shoot for $5,000 though. Business owners struggle here because income fluctuates. Some months great some slower that’s business.
UAE gets that. Not expecting same monthly income like salary. Want average over three to six months meeting threshold. General consistency even if not perfect.
Bank statements last three months showing deposits matching income. THIS almost screwed me lots of business owners struggle here.
Reinvesting profits like me? Contractors software ads whatever only paying yourself occasionally irregular amounts? Personal bank statements might not show consistent income even though business fine.
Business account good cash flow. Personal account spotty.
Submitted both personal and business statements together. Show both sides business healthy generating revenue even if not paying yourself identical amounts.
Some submitted tax returns P&L statements proving earning capacity. Not guaranteed but helps if personal statements alone don’t tell story.
Wait should mention almost didn’t submit business statements thought they only wanted personal. Marcus was like “just send both worst case they ignore business ones” glad I listened think that’s what got me approved.
Freelancers I Don’t Know Honestly
Gets really messy here.
Freelancers can technically apply but gotta be strategic.
Freelance Visa suspended can’t use anymore. Freelancer with international clients not UAE clients can apply under virtual work visa as “business owner”.
How you present yourself matters.
Have registered business entity? LLC US limited company UK whatever? Apply as business owner using that. Need all business owner stuff above registration proof ownership proof income docs bank statements everything.
Just doing freelance contract work? 1099 US equivalent? No formal entity just you clients laptop?
Really messy mixed results.
Some freelancers approved submitting long-term client contracts one year minimum proof ongoing relationships invoices consistent income. Building case even without formal entity have stable clients functioning like business.
Others flat rejected couldn’t show “business ownership” without formal entity. Immigration told them “just contractor not business owner denied”.
Really inconsistent depends who reviews frustrating.
Serious about Dubai visa as freelancer? Register formal business entity home country before applying. Doesn’t have to be complicated expensive.
US LLC few hundred bucks minimal annual maintenance. UK limited company fifty hundred pounds register. Not difficult.
Formal structure makes application way stronger. Instead “freelancer hoping accept contracts” you’re “business owner registered entity” better position.
Plus formal entity tax benefits liability protection anyway good move even without visa.
Friend who’s freelancer writer maybe designer one of those applied without LLC rejected then formed LLC reapplied six months later approved. Just get LLC if freelancing makes easier.
Should organize this better honestly but this is how it happened one messy thing after another until figured it out got approved. Dubai’s great no regrets but getting here chaos.
So I’m Actually Doing This
Two days after Marcus screenshot I’m on Expedia looking at flights except wait no first had to apply for the Dubai virtual work visa couldn’t just show up Dubai obviously.
Sitting in café Chiang Mai the AC one near Nimman fifteen browser tabs open all different Dubai visa websites getting more confused the more read.
One site saying apply through u.ae other saying gdrfad.gov.ae and I’m staring at both like are these both real? Which one’s official? Is one scam website looks identical how do I even tell?
Google “UAE government visa official” get like ten results all look official all have gov.ae domains all slightly different information super helpful.
End up on one of them u.ae maybe the other can’t remember there’s portal create account start filling application form.
Name passport number birthday okay easy.
Current address staring at that field like what do I even put I’m Airbnb leaving in two weeks before that different Airbnb before that different Airbnb I don’t have address I’m nomad that’s literally the whole thing.
Put my parents place Florida haven’t been there since god 2019 maybe 2020 whenever I left doesn’t matter needed something.
Form keeps going employment business registration income uploading PDFs LLC stuff bank statements client contracts just uploading everything have hoping something works.
Photos section need passport photo white background specific size whatever.
Have passport photos somewhere in bag from last visa thing just use those right.
Upload portal rejects it immediately.
Error message something about background not acceptable file size wrong not even clear just “upload failed” like thanks very descriptive.
Thirty minutes trying resize compress re-upload same photo keeps rejecting it.
Give up need new photos specifically for UAE apparently my regular passport photos aren’t good enough for them.
Walk to photo place near apartment guy barely speaks English showing him measurements on phone he’s nodding pretty sure has zero idea what I’m talking about.
Takes photos anyway pay him 200 baht six bucks something.
Back at apartment upload new photos portal rejects again.
Almost throw laptop.
Background too grey maybe size still wrong who knows at this point.
Back to photo place next day same guy looks at me like why you here again Google Translate trying explain background needs whiter more pure white he nods takes new photos.
These finally work thank god.
Bank statements this where I panic personal account looks terrible.
One deposit $2,000 then nothing whole month then $1,500 then nothing again completely inconsistent because reinvest everything business so personal spotty.
Business account way better consistent revenue but wasn’t sure they want business statements or personal.
Upload both figure can’t hurt worst case ignore business ones probably what saved me honestly personal alone looked sketchy.
Insurance need international health insurance don’t have it.
Looking at companies SafetyWing IMG Global Cigna all these all expensive like $180 monthly maybe $200 can’t remember definitely over $150 somewhere in there.
Go with IMG I think upload certificate.

Total 3,685 dirhams remember exact number because was like holy shit over thousand dollars just application thought maybe couple hundred not over grand.

Six Months In And Everything Costs More Than Expected
So I’ve been Dubai maybe three four months everything seems okay apartment nice work setup good then June hits and everything changes.
Wake up one morning early because apartment feels warm check thermostat AC running full blast set to 20 Celsius which is like 68 Fahrenheit but still warm.
Look outside sun not even fully up yet already see heat waves off pavement.

Walking out thinking how anyone afford living here not making good money insane.

Real talk-if you’re making less than $5,000 a month, don’t have savings for setup costs, probably skip Dubai. You’ll just stress about money the whole time, no fun constantly calculating if you can afford eating out. Want culture, history, authentic vibes, old architecture, traditional local experiences Definitely skip it, Dubai isn’t that at all, everything built in the last 20 years feels like living inside an airport mall.
Summer genuinely brutal don’t believe people; four months can’t go outside without dying, that’s for real, not an exaggeration.
But here’s the thing: if you’re tired of the visa runs, tired of that immigration anxiety, tired of pretending you’re a tourist when everyone knows you’re not-the landlord knows it, the immigration officer who’s looking at your stamps knows it, the coffee shop in which you work every day knows it, everyone knows it, everyone pretends it’s fine until it isn’t.
That legal residency thing hits different honestly. First time in years, like actual years, I’m not low-key stressed about visas every single day, not thinking about next border run, not worried they’ll deny me entry; that feeling alone might be worth the cost.
Infrastructure is here: crazy good, internet-is-insanely-fast-like-800 mbps, never had such fast internet in my life. Video calls are smooth, uploading is instant. Everything works, everything’s clean, reliable. Being actually able to open a bank account, sign a real apartment lease, get a phone plan-normal adult stuff that’s totally impossible on a tourist visa.
Dubai virtual work visa is not perfect; not permanent for me-probably do a year, maybe two, then move somewhere else, who knows, that’s just Nomad life, anyway. For now, it works as a stable base, it’s a solid legal situation, I can finally focus on actual work and not constantly think about visa stress, immigration anxiety, and border runs.

If interested, though-stop reading more guides; seriously, it won’t help. Just apply and see what happens. Worst case, they say no, you’re out-a thousand bucks application fee or whatever; not the end of the world, move on, and try something else. Best case, approved, living in Dubai legally for a year as a digital nomad.
